Reliability engineering

Keep selling while
the system keeps evolving.

Thonem reliability is about protecting revenue-critical contracts: checkout, payments, order state, integrations and customer journeys. Non-critical failures should be observable without turning the whole storefront into an outage.

OPERATING MODEL

Failures need boundaries,
not wishful thinking.

The goal is not to pretend failures never happen. The goal is to make each failure understandable, contained and recoverable while protecting the integrity of money, inventory and order state.

01

Protect the critical path

Payment, inventory and security failures must not be silently converted to success. A safe stop is better than a corrupted order.

02

Degrade non-critical features

Analytics, recommendations or secondary integrations should not automatically take the core buying journey down with them.

03

Use error references

Log enough structured context to investigate later, while returning a stable reference that support and engineering can trace.

04

Retry deliberately

Retries belong behind idempotent contracts with backoff and limits—not inside loops that can duplicate side effects.

05

Deploy in small boundaries

Validate routes, preserve baselines, reload infrastructure gracefully and keep rollback narrower than the whole application.

06

Measure before optimizing

Performance work starts with request timing, query cost, queue depth and cache behavior, not assumptions.

PUBLIC STATUS BOUNDARY

The website will not claim “all systems operational” without an independent monitor.

The public status page remains intentionally neutral until a real monitoring feed is connected. Marketing copy should never become a substitute for telemetry.
